Can the geology of a place become the starting point for a new artistic creation?
This question gave rise to GeoChromia, a new series of contemporary art exhibitions presented at ARTLAB by Think of Serifos on the island of Serifos. The first exhibition, dedicated to Painting & Printmaking, opens on 26 July at 20:30 and explores the meeting point between the island’s unique geology and contemporary artistic practice.
The exhibition presents the outcome of a shared artistic experiment. Rocks and mineral-rich earth collected from six different locations across Serifos were sent to the participating artists as a common starting point for research and creative exploration. From that moment on, each artist followed a unique path. The resulting works reveal the remarkable diversity of artistic approaches that can emerge when everyone begins with the same material and the same question.
GeoChromia is the culmination of an artistic inquiry that began on Serifos nearly a decade ago. A simple question—what can happen when the rocks and earth of the island are placed in the hands of an artist?—gradually evolved into an open invitation for painters, printmakers, ceramic artists and photographers to develop their own visual responses.
