Deposits
Every place leaves a trace. Sometimes we recognize it as a memory or an experience. At other times, it remains silent, like an imperceptible imprint that we continue to carry with us, even after we have left.
In the series Deposits, soil collected from different locations across Serifos is transferred onto the human body. It does not function as something that covers or transforms the body, but rather as a deposit of a place. The body becomes a landscape, and the soil becomes the sediment of an encounter. The curves of the skin evoke mountain peaks, coastlines, and the contours of the land. The small accumulations of soil recall the natural deposits formed by time, wind and gravity. They do not represent the landscape itself, but rather the imprint it leaves upon us. Just as every landscape is shaped by its successive deposits, so too is human identity shaped by the places we have inhabited, crossed, and loved.
Perhaps, in the end, we never truly leave a place. A small part of it continues to reside within us, even when we are unaware of it.

Anna Gouvianaki
Anna Gouvianaki was born and raised in Athens. She studied Architecture at the National Technical University of Athens and continued her studies with a postgraduate degree at the Sorbonne in Paris. She lived and worked in Brussels, where photography became a tool for observation and documentation within her architectural practice.
For the past fifteen years, photography has been her primary medium of personal expression. In her work, she explores the relationship between the body, place, and memory, approaching landscape not only as geography, but as an experience that leaves its imprint on the human being. Her architectural perspective meets photography in an exploration of the relationships between form, matter, and space. She has attended seminars in photographic technique, the history of photography, and studio photography. Her work has been presented in Paphos, Serifos, Athens, and Thessaloniki.
