Photography Exhibition “Starry Serifos”

ArtLab presents a selection of photographs captured by Mentor Drakoulis.
Opening night: 19 July 2025 at 20:30

The Milky way

The Milky Way is our home, since the Earth, the Sun and our solar system are contained within it. On a dark night with no clouds or moon we can see the core of the Milky Way, which usually rises after midnight.  With the naked eye the core is faintly visible, but cameras with a multi-second exposure can capture much more detail.

The Greek name for the Milky Way (Γαλαξίας – Galaxias) is derived from the Greek word for milk (γάλα – gala). According to one of the legends on how the Milky Way was created, Zeus (Jupiter) decided to let his son Heracles suckle on his divine wife Hera‘s milk when she was asleep, an act which would endow the baby with godlike qualities. When Hera woke and realized that she was breastfeeding another woman’s infant, she pushed him away and the spurting milk became the Milky Way.

A still more glorious dawn awaits. Not a sunrise, but a galaxy-rise.         A morning filled with 400 billion suns. The rising of the Milky Way.”
