Passage of Matter
“What drew me to this particular image was that I wasn’t simply looking at an old, rusted structure. It is the old loading pier at Mega Livadi, the point where the ore from Serifos, after being extracted, reached the sea and was loaded onto ships to continue its journey.
Today, the structure no longer serves any function, yet it remains there as a trace of that entire history. For me, the rust, the decay, and the sea behind it are what connect the past with the present.
I wanted the photograph to speak more about this transition: from land to sea, from extraction to journey, from something that was once part of everyday work to something that now remains as a memory embedded in the landscape.” — Nikos Kokolakis

Nikos Kokolakis
Nikos Kokolakis is a photographer based in Athens and Serifos, specialising in architectural and interior photography. He studied Architectural Photography at Leica Academy Greece, and his work focuses on the relationship between space, light, material, and landscape.
Alongside his professional practice, he systematically photographs the Cycladic environment, seeking out details, textures, and forms that often go unnoticed.
Serifos has been a constant point of reference in both his life and photographic vision, shaping the way he approaches the land, architecture, and their relationship with light and the sea. In his personal work, he is less interested in the descriptive documentation of a place and more in revealing its materiality, its traces, and the transformations left upon it by time.
