Study, Variations
“As I received the materials from Serifos, many ideas started popping into my mind. So many things could be done. I gave some time to let the ideas settle. Finally, all that made sense was to do what I usually do, with the only difference that I would add these exciting new elements into and onto the clay body I would be working with. I turned to stoneware so that the Serifos material could speak. The firing would bring the results. I started to pinch and to explore variations on a theme. As I started to pinch my little cups and include the Serifos elements in and onto the clay body, the idea of using clays from Aegina seemed to make sense. And so the study became a dialogue between two islands, which I intend to continue. Rocks and powders and pigments – new elements require a steady framework so that what appears is actually seen and witnessed.”

“I discovered the art of ceramics on the island of Aegina, where I have been living for the last years. It is here I realized that I belong to the earth, that what gives me roots is the very earth on which I stand, on which I walk. Clay offers me a home. It is with respect, fascination and patience that I work with clay. My practice of ceramics has a meditative approach. I take time to listen to the clay, feel where it takes me, create a dialogue with it and find a way to express myself through it and with it. My hands follow its guidelines, softly and decided, conscious and with a desire to be free of stereotypes. My hands, my fingers are the continuation of my breathing; each gesture in harmony with each breath so as to leave its imprint on the pieces, whether everyday objects or sculptures. Ceramics is a creative journey of never-ending research”.
marina was introduced to the realm of ceramics through her mentor and dear friend, ceramicist Theodora Chorafas. She spent 5 years in her teacher’s studio until she finally set up her own studio in November 2023. She continues her research in the world of clay of low and high temperature, insisting on single firing. She has developed a special love for simple, everyday objects, looking to find that “magic” harmony between aesthetics and functionality, which create their identity.
marina was born in London of a nomad Brazilian mother and a Greek father, grew up in Paris and Rio de Janeiro and studied in London. She came to Greece in 1999 and landed in Aegina in 2012 somewhat by chance, with her partner Yanis Zagorianakos, chemist-artist-artisan. Together they created The Cool Projects in 2013. Their studio in Aegina is a lively space, open to all.
