Metamorphic Rocks: Serifos
Titled Metamorphic Rocks: Serifos, this work represents the natural and conceptual evolution of an ongoing exploration of geological and inner transformation. This time, the earth of Serifos itself becomes the raw material: authentic minerals from the island are incorporated into three different clay bodies.
Thin slabs of clay are then layered and shaped, creating pronounced, undulating folds reminiscent of geological strata under tectonic pressure. The work’s dynamic movement embodies the very essence of “seafaring earth”—an earth that shifts, transforms, and travels.
Inside the kiln, the embedded rocks melt and get absorbed into the clay. Combined with crawl glazes, they create rough, fractured textures, evoking a primordial rock shaped by the forces of nature and the passage of time.
Just as rocks are transformed by pressure and heat, so too are human beings shaped by their experiences, revealing new textures and possibilities.

Maria Sanoudaki
Maria Sanoudaki
With a background in Architecture (Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and postgraduate studies in Barcelona), Maria Sanoudaki approaches ceramic art through a deep understanding of structure, form, and materials. She places particular emphasis on glaze technology, an area in which she has developed extensive knowledge through specialised seminars with established ceramic artists and educators.
In her sculptural practice, she focuses on the relationship between form and symbolism, drawing inspiration from ancient Greek ceramics. Since 2015, she has been creating in her own studios in Crete (Ano Hersonissos and Heraklion), exploring the boundaries between functionality and sculptural form.
Alongside her personal artistic practice, she remains actively involved in ceramic education. She has worked as an instructor at the School of Ceramics in Thrapsano and also hosts Erasmus trainees at her studio, welcoming students from a ceramics school in Finland for practical training.
She currently serves as Vice President of the Pan-Cretan Ceramics Association “Keramon”, while her work has been presented in group exhibitions throughout Greece, including at Mon Coin Studio, Chimera Gallery, and the Municipal Art Gallery of Heraklion.
