We selected 7 different sites on the island: Avessalos Beach, Avessalos Turn, Agia Triada, Malliadiko, Megalo Livadi Wagons, Megalo Livadi Bridge, Gyftika, from which we collected sand, soil and iron-rich rocks. We packaged them in small boxes and mailed them to 27 ceramists. We asked them to draw inspiration from the materials at hand and incorporate them into their unique art piece. Most of the ceramists admitted that it was their first exposure to both the materials and the techniques they applied to create their piece. With the original and authentic artists’ creations, we attempt to travel to the Serifian land once again; not building another product of exploitation, as was the case in the past, but a product of inspiration that will promote the island’s artistic nature that knows no boundaries, just like human imagination and creativity.
Serifos is an island with long mining history and huge scientific interest in terms of geology, mining and metallurgy. The metallurgical remains that exist in the island constitute a technological heritage of outstanding importance, as they are more than 3500 years old.
The ridges of this rich land are crossed by a magnificent mining transport network, which for centuries operated without machines, with the minimal forces of pack animals and men, collecting and shipping thousands of tons of ore to the sea level. Ships were arriving there; they loaded the ore and sailed it to the earth's furthest reaches. It is estimated that the 'funnels' of the industrial revolution in Europe, from 1870 to 1964, were supplied with over 100 million tons of Serifian iron ore.
