LITHOSPHERE
The casket handed to us by the exhibition organizers was a work of art in itself. Opening it, the eyes are illuminated by the earthy colors of the iron ores that abound on the island. The ores, which were collected from seven different parts of Serifos, were in all known shades of iron, i.e. red, yellow, black and brown. Colors that would be tested in the fire mixed with clay glazed but also simply applied.
The original idea which prevailed as the final choice was to create bowls in which after glazing and before it dries, i.e. while the glass is still fresh, I sprinkle it to incorporate the iron ores I have chosen into the base material along the entire length and bowl width. The end result pleased me and made me want to experiment further with local materials.
These are three open bowls, made with strips of clay with gaps between them, fired at a high temperature, 1270°C. They are elevated. They rest on simple bases, made on the wheel, creating an illusion of movement. Their dimensions are 20×20, 22×22 and 15×17 centimeters
The glaze I used is white-beige and on top of it I poured almost all the materials you sent us: Agia Triada – Malliadiko – Vagonia – Gyftika.
The land of Serifos opened roads for us…
