TRANSPORTATION CONTAINERS

Maro Theodorou, in her work “Transportation Containers”, outlines an entire system of moving minerals in a more traditional – ancient way, which aesthetically fits the worldview of Serifos. The vessels are made of stoneware clay, glazed with oak ash and fired at 1260°C, mixed with crushed rocks from Megalo Livadi Bridge, the turn in Avessalos, Malliadiko and Agia Triada. This mix, built by hand using the coiling technique, transfuses a style that suits the manual way of working in the mines of Serifos, where the workers moved the rocks with their own bodies as the main tool. The basic materials, hair, wood, handles and lid made of island stones, create a feeling similar to that of the depths of the earth, where the various types of rocks are mined and provide a more industrial feel to these earth containers. More precisely, just as the lithosphere is not a single surface but consists of smaller surfaces that slide over the solid mantle, so containers are made up of smaller pieces that all together create a surface that fulfills its purpose when it transports the pieces of this soil. The transportation containers act as a medium, which connects the outside with the inside, the outter with the inner, the being with the appearance. A perpetual metaphor, which is born from the earth to end up and transfigure into a new matter through it.
