Archival images and documents from the late 1910s and early 1920s, relating to the island\u2019s mine workers\u2019 strikes,<br \/>are reactivated through a new material form, entering into dialogue with contemporary<br \/>photographic observations of the landscape. Rather than reconstructing history or positioning past and present in opposition, the work explores the continuity of memory and the<br \/>ways in which a place retains the traces of its histories. The present emerges as a layered<br \/>terrain, shaped by the sedimentation of human experience, much like ore embedded within<br \/>geological formations.<br \/>The work approaches Serifos as a palimpsest: a landscape in which geology, labour, and<br \/>collective memory are continuously inscribed upon one another. Through overlapping temporalities and material traces, the island becomes a space where histories remain embedded, transformed, and never fully erased.<\/p><p>The work consists of a composition of heterogeneous photographic and ceramic elements.<br \/>Digital prints derived from analogue photographs are integrated onto papers of varying textures and weights. The ceramic tiles, bisque-fired, bear cyanotype impressions of archival<br \/>photographic material and documents, becoming integrated elements within the overall<br \/>composition<br \/><br 1638w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/>Ioanna Spentzou was born in 1998 in Athens, Greece where she lives and works. She is a<br \/>graduate of the Department of Photography and Audiovisual Arts at the University of West<br \/>Attica.<br \/>Her work focuses on concepts such as memory, loss, and the search for belonging, using the photographic act as a means of personal and collective exploration. Her artistic<br \/>practice unfolds around experimental photographic techniques, the research and creative<br \/>use of anonymous archival material, analog printing processes, and the making of artists\u2019<br \/>books.<br \/>She has participated in group exhibitions such as Abstract Machines: The Gaze of Psychoanalysis in Photography (curated by Eleni Mesadou, 2023) at the CheapArt Week 2023 \u2013<br \/>CURIOUS WORLDS.<br \/>Her photographic artist book Absentin received an Honorable Mention at the 9th World<br \/>Biennial of Student Photography 2023 (Novi Sad, Serbia) and was previously showcased<br \/>in the photobook exhibition of the Athens Photo Festival 2022.
